Context

Empower surveys help better understand employee experience within a company. By providing survey results through visual representations, based on feedback from the workforce, it becomes easier to identify areas for improvement and track progress over time. This tool empowers users to make use of the following features:

  • Create Initiatives/Action Plans with all the necessary details and assign contributors. Empower offers a diverse range of board views, featuring “drag and drop” functionality and configurable lanes. Initiatives can be categorized into different statuses such as active, inactive, or closed.
  • For each action plan, users can create and assign tasks to members. Tasks also have various statuses, ensuring clear visibility of progress. Furthermore, members’ engagement level is displayed through analytics.
  • Empower includes a section for huddles to take meeting minutes and ensure everyone remains accountable and engaged throughout the process.
  • Employees are able to contribute their own ideas and vote on initiatives. These ideas can be discussed and transformed into actionable initiatives later on.
  • The tool provides data analytics on initiatives, whether they are in progress or completed, providing insights into the overall progress and impact of the actions taken.

Challenge

Overall, the development process of Empower has been smooth, thanks to our prior experience with the creation of a similar tool called Outerloop, designed specifically for customer experience, while Empower is for employee experience. However, we did encounter one challenging task during the project, which involved developing a shared library across all the tools within QuestionPro created by BeeWeb. This feature allows changes made to a key component in one tool to be automatically applied across all the interconnected tools.

Solution

For the development of the shared library, we invested much time for research. In addition, our CTO actively engaged in the process. Due to our collective efforts, we created an effective shared library, integrated across all the products within QuestionPro.

Development Process

We started the development process from scratch, without even a design in place. However, by prioritizing functionality, we managed to make progress. Later on, a design was provided to us. Our work on Empower was divided into two phases. In the first 4 months, we focused on developing the MVP. Following that, we took a break, during which the product management team conducted research to improve the product. With the change in their team lead, new features were introduced, which we have been working on since then.
Our dedicated team for Empower comprises a frontend developer, a backend developer, and a project manager. We have followed the Kanban methodology for project management. This involves daily standups with the team and weekly meetings with the client to give updates and receive feedback. The project management tools encompass Shortcut for task management, Google Drive for file sharing and Slack for communication.
Presently, our main focus is on developing the employee engagement portal.

Result

The beta version of the product is available on QuestionPro, which is still used internally. At the moment sales demos are made to present the product to the QuestionPro customers.
